ERICEIRA

A traditional fishing village, ERICEIRA developed a lot during the 20th century due to its growing demand as a summer resort, while maintaining its original characteristics and a very unique atmosphere.

Located about 50 kms from Lisbon, in an easily accessible area, its beaches are very popular during the summer, being considered the best in Europe for surfing. A special highlight deserves the Praia de Ribeira d'Ilhas, where one of the tests of the World Surfing Championship is held annually.

A walk through ERICEIRA is also an excellent opportunity to taste the varied seafood and fresh fish dishes, the region's gastronomic specialty.

The ERICEIRA WORLD SURFING RESERVE (WSR) is a world-class surf zone encompassing approximately 8 km of coastline.

It contains a high density of outstanding surf breaks, including iconic breaks such as Ribeira d’Ilhas and Coxos, among others.

“It is a homage to all local fishermen that over the centuries have respected and praised this beautiful ocean. It is also an assumption of the responsibility for its preservation, making sure that this valuable universal heritage will continue to be enjoyed in its entirety by future generations, just as it was for the pioneers of surf in Portugal, who were awed by its discovery.”
